Tips for Preparing Tasty Short Ribs

Beef short ribs are a popular and affordable alternative to many other cuts of meat. Cooked properly, beef short ribs are a delicious meal that ranks near the top of many people’s favorite foods list. Achieving the best results does, however, require care with preparation and cooking. These are a few tips for preparing short ribs.

You have several options when purchasing short ribs. The ribs may be boneless, English-style, or cross-cut. Many people prefer bone-in ribs to boneless, but this is a matter of preference. English-style short ribs are cut between the ribs so that each rib has one bone and a piece of meat. Cross-cut ribs, also known as flanken-style ribs, are cut across the ribs so that each cut has several small pieces of rib bone.

Short ribs are most commonly braised as this cooking method results in tender meat with a delicious sauce. Some people like to use other methods of cooking short ribs, though the result will be different.

Braising short ribs requires using a heavy pot with a cover. The short ribs should be cooked covered over medium heat. It will usually take several minutes on each side for the ribs to cook through.

Another option for short ribs is to cook them outdoors on a grill. This can be an attractive option during warm weather as it avoids heating up the house. Short ribs cooked on a grill will not be as tender as ribs that are braised, but will instead be more like steak.

No matter which cooking method you use for short ribs, you will probably want to start with a favorite marinade. A good marinade can make almost any food better, and short ribs are no exception to this rule.

The results that you will achieve cooking beef short ribs will be affected greatly by the quality of the meat.
