Tips for Making an Amazing Roast

Tips for Making an Amazing Roast

by Mark Erb October 03, 2017

Roast beef is a traditional dinner that has been popular for many years. Despite its long popularity, preparing and cooking roast beef may be intimidating if you have not done it before. Here are a few tips for making an amazing roast.

A memorable roast beef dinner starts with choosing the right meat. A bone-in rib roast is often considered the best option for roast beef, but you can also use a bottom or top round roast. Whichever cut you choose, try to select a roast that has a layer of fat as well as marbling (small strips of fat within the meat) as these fat features help to keep the roast moist and flavorful.

Cooking a roast is actually fairly simple. It is best if you start cooking the meat when it is room temperature. Set the roast in a pan as it warms and season according to your preferences. Seasoning can be as simple as coating with salt and pepper. Once you are ready to cook the roast, place it in an oven that has been pre-heated to 425 F. Cook the roast at 425 F for 30 minutes, and then reduce the oven temperature to 375 F until it is fully cooked.

The amount of time it will take to cook the roast depends on how thoroughly you want it cooked and the overall weight. As a general rule, the roast will take about 11 minutes per pound for rare and up to  16 minutes per pound for well done.

Once the roast is cooked, remove it from the oven and set it on a platter covered with aluminum foil. Allowing the roast to rest for about 20 minutes prior to eating will produce meat that is more tender.
